Caffeine is a stimulant; how you respond to it is individual. For scale, USDA FoodData Central puts a regular cup of brewed coffee of about 240 ml at about 95 mg of caffeine, and Red Bull states 80 mg for a 250 ml can. EFSA's 2015 scientific opinion on caffeine gives 400 mg a day, and 200 mg in a single serving, as reference figures for healthy adults.
LEWA is the lightest route at 20 mg and the only one whose panels list more than caffeine: BURN lists magnesium, vitamin B1 and B2; FOCUS lists magtein and vitamin B12. Hicaff is the highest at 100 mg per pouch, and its panels are the plainest: cellulose, caffeine, flavourings, salt, salmiak, glycerol, sodium carbonate, sucralose and sodium alginate.
Where the format differs
A few things vary between products and are worth reading off the can before you order.
- Pouches per can. 20 is the norm in our zero-nicotine range, Onico Pure White is 22, and every LEWA product is 18.
- Pouch weight. The Slim products run from 0.5 g (XQS) to 0.75 g (CAMO).
- Sweetener. Most panels list sucralose (E955) or acesulfame K (E950). VELO Zero adds xylitol (E967). LEWA uses erythritol (E968) and stevia (E960) alongside sucralose.
- Ingredients list. Eleven products have no ingredients list on their product page: six Zeronito Slim flavours (Espresso, Lakrits, Jalapeno, Exotic, Honey Melon Ice, Peach Ice), the four Après Zero products and LOOP Ice Cool Mint Zero. For those, read the ingredients panel on the can.
What to check on the can
Three lines on the can tell you whether a product matches the format.
- Nicotine. Look for "0 mg", "nicotine free" or "Zero" in the product name.
- Format and count. "Slim" and the pouches-per-can number. The net weight per can, printed in grams, divided by the count gives you the pouch weight.
- Ingredients. Plant fibre (E460 or cellulose) first, then water, flavourings, salt, a humectant, a pH regulator and sweeteners. On a caffeine pouch, caffeine is in the list and the amount per pouch is printed separately.
